'Jacob and the Decorators' - not a popular beat combo from the late 60's but a sychronised kite flying team. I spent a while watching and getting photos from around the group, and it was tricky not to just watch. The skill was impressive. Trying to do justice to their skills in photographs was quite an operation.
During a break I managed to talk with Jacob. He explained how the group got the name. Originally they used to use overalls to keep the wind out and someone said they looked like a 'bunch of decorators'. The name stuck.
The 'calling' was accomplished with crisp clear commands. Think of a Highland Ceiledh without the alcohol! Each person in the group of six managed to control their kite whilst, to my lay-mans eyes, chaos appeared in the lines - crossed, twisted, done up, undone - a veritable cats cradle.
Their concentration was total. Occasionally one person would go 'out of synch' but the others would carry on to be rejoined at a appropriate moment.
I managed to get plenty of images of the kites themselves, too many for this blog. They will appear on my website or Flickr at a later stage.
